Moving to a new home is an exhilarating process, but no one wants to start a new chapter with an injury. We at Flannery’s have some tips on moving safely and lowing your risk for getting hurt!
You should use a dolly to move heavy boxes and other objects to the moving truck and around your home. Dollies are useful to have around even when you’re not planning on moving because they encourage better lifting habits and prevent back injuries. For furniture too big to lift with a dolly, make sure you follow good lifting practices. Lift with your knees gradually while keeping your back straight.
When lifting larger furniture, such as sofas and tables, carry them at an angle. One person should be carrying the item a little higher on one side and the second should carry at a lower angle. This allows you to maintain control of what you are moving while going up flights of stairs. You can also use furniture straps or ramps to move heavy objects. Straps can be adjusted to fit the mover and allow you to lift with your shoulders and forearms.
Always lift heavy objects with another person. Moving alone can be hazardous, and sharing the weight with another person reduces risk of injury. When possible, hire a moving company. Professionals know how to move without injury or damaging your property.
