white home in the autumn

Tasks to take care of in the fall

At Flannery’s Handymen, we’re always working on one task or another. Whether it’s moving, demolition jobs or junk hauling, we know there is always something more to do.  Once autumn hits, it’s natural to start thinking ahead and getting things prepared for the winter.  After all, we’ve been spending a lot of time indoors lately and we want to make sure things are in tip top shape as we prepare for the long, cold day’s ahead. With that in mind, we’ve put together a number of tasks that are perfect to work on while the days get shorter and the air cooler.

Clean those gutters

This is one of those jobs that is good to tackle before it gets too cold outside. People often forget about this job because the issues are often out of site, but ignoring this clean-up task can lead to some problems.

In addition to catching the falling rain and melting snow, gutters are also in the perfect spot to catch falling leaves and twigs. Birds love to grab things to help build their nests during mating season so you never know what you may find up there! After that though, organic material left to decompose will block your gutters from functioning properly and potentially attract rodents who are looking for warmer place to settle during the cold months. Far from an ideal situation since its just a quick trip into your warmer house from there! There’s some ladder climbing and potentially messy work involved but gutter cleaning is well worth it.  If you need help, Flannery’s Handymen can take this task on for you.  Just contact us to discuss.

Call that Chimney Sweep

This falls into the better-safe-than-sorry category, but people often forget just how important those chimneys are to your home.  It is particularly important to have your chimney cleaned and inspected if your regularly burn fires during the winter months and leave residue on the inside of your chimney.

Other issues that can hit without warning are structural issues to the chimney itself, especially if it is older.  Debris and animals can get trapped in there leading to blockages and other unpleasantness.  But perhaps the modern chimneys most important job is redirecting the poisonous gases generated by heating your home.  If these don’t vent properly, you risk carbon monoxide backing up into your home.

Change batteries

Speaking of fires and poisonous gases, this is the perfect time to go through your home and put fresh batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  A quick and easy job that can make a big difference.

Check your heating system

Once you’re cold is not the time to find out you have a problem.  Change the filter to make sure your system is going to run with maximum efficiency.  A dirty, clogged filter can decrease the lifespan of your furnace and jack up your utility bills.

If you need help hauling away any debris from your cleaning and inspection tasks, let us know.  We can help.
