Preparing to Move Your Refrigerator

As many homeowners know, moving can be a difficult time! Moving heavy appliances, like your refrigerator, can be even more difficult. The large and wide shape of a refrigerator can make it difficult to maneuver through your home’s doorways.

Below, you’ll find some tips for moving a refrigerator safely:

  • The first thing you’ll want to do is remove everything from inside the refrigerator. Remove all food, ice trays, condiments and any other perishable items. You’ll want to remove any trays or shelves so they won’t rattle around during the move. Removing these items will also make the refrigerator a little lighter.
  • Once your items are removed, unplug your refrigerator and neatly tape the power cord to it. With the plug taped, you won’t be able to trip over it as you move the refrigerator.
  • Most likely, your freezer will have a buildup of frost so you’ll need to give it some time to defrost and melt. As you let your freezer defrost, make sure you keep the door open so a foul odor doesn’t develop inside. This is also a good time to grab some cleaning products and clean the inside of the refrigerator.
  • Once your refrigerator is clean and dry, you can secure the doors with rope or a bungee cord.
