3 Items You Can Get Rid of During Spring Cleaning

Summer is quickly approaching, but there’s always time to do some spring cleaning! If you have items taking up valuable space in your home and are looking to make room, start with these during your decluttering!

Out-of-Date Paperwork

There are some papers you will always need including birth certificates, social security cards and tax documents. However, if you have drawers and drawers filled to the brim with old school projects and paid bills, you can dispose of them. If it contains valuable information or the project holds sentimental value, you can scan them and store them on an external hard drive, which will take up less space and create less of a potential fire hazard than stacks of paper.

Bulky Items that are Not Functional

Do you have large kitchen appliances you got from a relative that, while interesting and fun to own, are not functional in the space you have? While it can be fun to have an ice cream maker handed down from your aunt, or your grandfather’s vintage armchair, if you do not have space for it or you can’t use it as an everyday item, it may be time to pass it along. Flannery’s Handymen takes one truck full of furniture per week and donates it to charities and families in need. If certain furniture or appliances do not work in your home, they may be able to help others! This can also apply to holiday decorations you do not have space for or cannot display properly.

Ill-Fitting or Rarely Worn Clothes

Do you have clothing that no longer fits that is simply taking up room in your dresser or closet? It is time to dispose or donate them. Gently used clothing can be donated to a number of local charities that help people in need, including organizations that provide outfits for job interviews or school uniforms for children. After emptying your closet, ask yourself four things:

  • Have I worn this in the last year?
  • Can I see myself wearing this in the immediate future?
  • Would I buy this in a store right now?
  • Does it fit?

If the answer to any of these questions is “no,” put them in a pile for donation.
